The UK lingerie industry is a varied and vibrant one and this was particularly reflected at the recent UK lingerie awards night. The glittering event took place on December 4th, 2013 at the Freemason’s Hall in London’s famous hotspot, Covent Garden. The show, organized by industry magazine Lingerie Insight, headlined dressing up solutions experts, Fashion Forms, as its principal sponsor.

The ethereal venue, an architectural spectacle, hosted the “up and coming” as well the “thoroughbreds” of lingerie, boudoir, swimwear night/lounge wear, hosiery and shapewear, and saw twenty-two awards being handed over to those who were well deserving.

This year, the event was opened to public attendance as opposed to just industry professionals and close associates, making it accessible not only to those who contribute and are connected to the industry, but also to those who simply just love lingerie (or a glitzy party).

TV presenter and gorgeous new mum, Millie Clode hosted the show and announced the night’s awards, which saw iconic lingerie brand Gossard snap up the two most enviable awards: Lingerie Brand of the year and Favourite Lingerie Brand.

Known for its sexy, cleavage-enhancing EgoBoost bra, the brand beat out Chantelle, Fleur of England and Fred & Ginger, to cop the coveted prize for lingerie brand of the year.

Gossard again edged out fuller bust brand Curvy Kate, who was also up for the same award last year, to win the accolade of Favourite Lingerie Brand for the second consecutive year. This award, down to public vote, makes Gossard the official number one lingerie choice for the UK for two years in a row. The other finalists in the category this year were the sensual, femme fatale brand Kiss Me Deadly and erotic, French influenced label, Maison Close.


Maison Close did, however, pick up the award for Boudoir Lingerie Brand of the year, from a field which included Myla, Something Wicked and the vintage-inspired, Madame SuperTrash who topped the category for New Designer of the Year.

Although it looked like a night for the independent brands and labels, lingerie strongholds, Panache and Freya clinched two prizes on the night: Panache for Sports Bra Brand and Freya for Marketing Campaign of the year for its Freya Deco 365 promotion paying homage to its popular Deco bras.

Were there any surprises on the night for me, I hear you ask? Yes, actually. Despite its popularity and robust following, multiple retailer and plus size bust specialist Bravissimo, did not hold up any awards on the night. They were outshined by the renowned Rigby & Peller for Multiple Retailer of the year and later upstaged by high street department store Debenhams in Favourite Lingerie Retailer. This goes to show that “likes” on social media don’t always translate into award-winning votes.

But the real surprise came for Gillian Proctor, when she picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to the industry and in helping to shape future lingerie professionals. Proctor, who is the Programme Leader of the Contour Fashion Course at De Montfort University in Leicester as well as the chairperson of the International Institute of Intimate Apparel, described her win as “a bit of a shock”. The crowd response confirmed that it was well earned by its gracious recipient.

I am certain all of the awards in all of the categories well deserved, so congratulations to all the winners at this year’s awards and three cheers for Gossard for once again convincing the British public that they deserve to be number one.

I’d never been really good at anything practical until I became a lingerie fitter. Now I talk about lingerie nearly all the time and -ask my hubby- I am a fierce critique of bras and the like. Throw in matching knickers, jewellery and heels and I’m in lingerie heaven.

Lingerie philosophy: Well fitting lingerie is always sexy even if it’s from the bargain bin!
