Bumbrella: 2-in-1, No Squeeze Panty Slip
“[Bumbrella’s] cute style lends a more modern silhouette and feel. It’s an ideal undergarment staple for all ages and body types. My hope is it will become a staple in every woman’s wardrobe.” Tara Gallagher.
Imagine this: It’s a hot summer day and you slip into your best little black dress, a sleek thong to avoid panty lines, and head out the door. You’re feeling great until you realize that direct sunlight turns you beautiful dress sheer. That’s exactly what happened to Tara Gallagher, president of Cici Soleil Ltd. “Mortifying,” she says of her experience. “To make matters worse, I was at a funeral.”
She began to search for a lightweight slip that wouldn’t twist or bunch but came up empty-handed. Everything on the market was too tight and restricting or outdated. So she decided to design her own alternative: The bumbrella, a half-slip reimagined for the modern women. It’s a two-in-one mini, no-squeeze, panty slip.
“It is the only undergarment of its kind and recently received a US patent for it’s innovative design,” adds Gallagher. “We took an outdated, under-appreciated garment and breathed new life into by making it more wearable and comfortable. Old granny half slips lack good styling and comfort.”
“The bumbrella features an integrated panty that keeps the slip in place so it won’t twist, turn or creep up.”
Athletic wear helped inspire Gallagher’s design. As a tennis player and runner she was used to wearing skirts with built in shorts. They are comfortable and offer coverage. “Running half marathons was a breeze, yet I was always readjusting my slip at cocktail parties, go figure,” she says. “Since the 2-in-1 design was perfect for my active life in sports, why not translate this design into a lightweight undergarment. My mom and I cut up and sewed many slips and underwear to arrive at the first bumbrella prototype. We believed we had a terrific idea that should come to life!”
The bumbrella features an integrated panty that keeps the slip in place so it won’t twist, turn or creep up. The no-squeeze fabric has just a bit of spandex to hug and smooth, but not constrict like shapewear. “We believe bumbrella is a healthier option for longer daily wear,” says Gallagher.
A background in medicine taught her that prolonged use of constricting shape garments lead to health issues. But unfortunately, there were few items on the market that would provide the right coverage without the compression.
“There was a void in the market for this type of product and bumbrella fills the niche,” she adds. “Younger women were no longer wearing slips and they were actually becoming quite hard to find. I always kept and old slip in my lingerie drawer just in case I needed to wear it under a sheer or unlined skirt or dress, but really disliked the bulk and movement of these outdated slips. Bumbrella makes wearing a slip feel hip again. Its cute style lends a more modern silhouette and feel. It’s an ideal undergarment staple for all ages and body types. My hope is it will become a staple in every woman’s wardrobe.”
Bumbrella bridges the gap between old-fashioned half-slip and current shaping slip. Gallagher thinks it belongs in a category of it’s own—Conceal Wear. “It fills a very specific niche and need to be recognized for what it is,” she says. “It conceals. Bumbrella is a mini slip with an attached panty. It is not shapewear and provides no tummy coverage or control.”
Fit & Fashion
Gallagher worked with some of the most talented pattern makers to create a product that did not squeeze or shape, but rather smoothed and hugged the body to provide coverage.
The Bumbrella is available in nude, black and true blue in sizes x-small through x-large. The two-in-one design is available with a thong panty or a hipster brief. The hem is re-enforced with extra weight so that the slip won’t ride up and the soft edge waistline allows you to decide what is the most comfortable placement of the slip.
The fabric is a nylon/spandex blend with a cotton gusset that won’t cling to your clothes. It remains cool during the warm months and protects against itchy wool fabrics during the winter. What’s more, it helps smooth out bumps and panty lines. “Women consistently compliment bumbrella’s silky hand feel. It is so lightweight and soft, it really feels like you aren’t wearing anything at all, but trust me, you definitely won’t look naked like I did at that funeral,” says Gallagher.
Finding the right fit for your bumbrella is easy. Gallagher recommends women measure around their hips and waist and use the online sizing guide to find their best fit. And she urges not to size down. “Bumbrella is meant to hang freely around your hips in its comfortable A-line shape,” she says. “A proper fit prevents the nuisance of ride-up or visible panty lines. If anything fits tightly around the backside, it will move when you move! This is NOT a good fit or look.”
Bumbrella: Perfect for Baby Bumps
The slips are also great for pregnant women as material works well with growing bumps. We recommend wearing the waistband beneath the baby bump for optimum comfort, but women know their bodies best. As her belly grows, she can easily adjusted the placement simply by shifting the waistband’s positions.” Most importantly during pregnancy, women should feel as comfortable as possible and compressive garments can be too much for a growing baby. Disrupting proper blood flow to any part of the body while pregnant isn’t healthy, Gallagher says, so bumbrella is a safe undergarment option.
Gallagher worked with some of the most talented pattern makers to create a product that did not squeeze or shape, but rather smoothed and hugged the body to provide coverage. “My pattern maker had over 40 years of experience in the lingerie industry, so her perspective was invaluable,” she says. “We constructed several samples until we achieved the perfect fit. Countless sessions with an industry fit models ensured the product provided superior comfort and functionality. We did tons of wear testing to ensure the product was durable. I am happy to say, the product turned out far better than I ever imagined.”
