Claudette CurveNY Preview

As you walk into the show space at CURVENY, one of the first booths you’ll immediately notice is Claudette’s — their collections are infused with an incredible spectrum of colors. As we inch closer to the show, which takes place from August 4 – 6, 2013 here in New York City, we wanted to give our readers a preview of what this brand will showcase at Jacob Javits. In this Q&A, Robin Levitt and Bok Goodall of Claudette sit down with us to talk all things Claudette, Color and Curve.
“Claudette is fearless with color! Each season we offer a totally new color palette.”
Last month, we gave our readers a peek at Claudette’s SS14 Collection, could you tell us a little bit more about SS14.
Bok: Spring/Summer 2014 is a “Riot of Color.” We really wanted bright splashes of color and fun clashing trims. When we start to design the collections, we always look at how they will be merchandised on the floor or online, and we want all collections to work together. It is possible to buy Claudette in very different ways depending on how you merchandise the colors.
We are so excited to have added new shapes and new collections this season — styles that we think our customers are looking for from Claudette. We will continue to offer 28 backs, which is something we have requests for continuously from customers — especially through bloggers, and we like to listen and act on these requests as much as possible.
“We decided on clean, modern pieces in subtle colors that work merchandised across all collections this season.”
How did the team come to deciding on offering loungewear pieces? Did you receive a lot of requests from buyers?
Bok: Lounge is something Robin really wanted to add to make a more complete offer to the customer. We decided on clean, modern pieces in subtle colors that work merchandised across all collections this season.
How different is SS14 from the previous collection? Why?
Bok: We like to add new collections each season as well as working with favorites that will go on to become Claudette classics. Our beloved Dessous collection has a new shape for SS14. A fun, almost retro feeling longline bra with the same full coverage everyone loves in Dessous. This is offered in a really fun polka dot. We also have Sophia — the most delicious crepe, which our customers love, we have added a solid black to Sophia for SS14 as a direct response to our customers requesting it.

For SS14 we have added a lace collection – Bardot; this is offered in four colorways – each solid color with no contrast. The trim on this collection is a pinstriped grosgrain bow, which adds a certain European feel. We hope Bardot will appeal to the customer who loves Dessous but feels it is maybe too sheer sometimes, and would like a less sheer option. We have a padded balconette and an unlined plunge bra in this collection, so there is something for everyone!
We have also added a lace over mesh range which is stunning, this collection is Odette – a beautiful longline bra, suspender thong and mesh back bikini – all with eyelash lace.

The photos look amazing and I’m sure the photo shoot looks like it was a lot of fun. Could you tell us a little bit about the photo shoot?
Bok: the concept was to create the feel of movie starlets at the beach. The feeling of black and white photos almost, but of course being Claudette we need full technicolor! We shot with Mark Sacro (again) – he’s amazing and really ‘gets’ our concepts and runs with them! It is always a pleasure working with Mark and his team, and we manage to get through a lot in a day without it seeming stressful.
We shot at a private residence on Mandalay Beach, Oxnard, California. The house was perfect and we had our own stretch of beach which was practically empty all day. We did cause a stir shooting outside in the street though – I think the fedex van passed by six times in half an hour!
The models were also amazing, could you talk a little bit more about the models you used for this shoot?
Bok: Our models are beautiful. We couldn’t have been happier.
Judith Lovingfoss (brunette) came at the recommendation of our photographer Mark –- and once we met her we knew she was just right for Claudette, she’s a really fun, clever, sassy girl who was a pleasure to work with. And, of course our blonde bombshell Gia Genevieve. I have to admit to stalking her slightly on line after seeing a picture of her somewhere almost a year ago! We knew she would be the perfect Claudette girl and so we set about tracking her down.
Some of the colors to SS14 are totally new, like concrete grey, could you tell us little bit more about the new colors?
Bok: Claudette is fearless with color! Each season we offer a totally new color palette. For SS14 our main accent colors are Hot Coral and Concrete Grey, which look amazing together and mixed with the other colors in the palette. Choosing the palette is so much fun, and we really get to throw colors together in a way that most brands don’t, something we have found our customers love us for!
At Claudette we don’t really do ‘nude’ – we know there’s a need for nude but we would hate to offer something that isn’t really the ‘right nude’, and let’s face it you can buy a nude bra in most collections, so when we do offer a neutral shade it is always contrasted with a trim. For SS14 we have Blondie (a pale beige) and Godiva (a sumptuous rich dark brown) both are trimmed with Hot Coral in Dessous, both are available in Odette and Blondie is available in Bardot.
What else are you bringing to New York for buyers to see?
Robin: Claudette has been recognized for the unexpected, and this season in New York, we expect that buyers will find there’s something for everyone for Spring 2014. We’ve brought back the bold bright colors – that will fill the request for neon’s from our original collection of Claudette. We know our accounts still love the bights – and our goal is to remain fresh – and keep the offering original each season. I think this season, Byers will find new choices to offer their clients, that will only enhance what they currently offer from Claudette, as well, compliment the stores merchandising plan and overall offering.

Claudette is known for it’s spectrum of sizing and colors. Some of our readers will be interested in learning more about your band sizes as well, could you tell us a bit about the band sizes you offer and in which styles?
Bok: All Claudette styles are offered 28 D-G, 30/32/34 A-G, 36/38 B-G (UK sizing, so DD and FF included). We try to be as inclusive as we can in our size range, and we know there is a customer out there looking for these sizes. Claudette consumers need to ask for the sizes they are looking for specifically wherever they buy their Claudette – we need the buyers to know there’s a demand!
Robin: This is such an important point! Although Claudette tries to accommodate special customer requests that come to us via email & social media – through our existing accounts, it is important that the accounts understand there are buyers out there looking for sizes, not readily available to them. 28 bands for example- we get many requests for them, however many buyers don’t always believe there is a “buyer” out there to purchase these. We KNOW and understand there is heavy demand for a larger cup offering from Claudette as well, and we desperately want to deliver on that request – however as a growing brand, we are trying not to over-promise. We hoped by the end of 2013 we would be able to introduce additional cup sizes, however were just not there yet, and still working on making that request come to fruition.

Show Special at CurveNY
At CurveNY, you’ll be offering a show special, correct? Could you tell our readers a little bit more about the show special?
Robin: Wouldn’t you like to know that!! Claudette will be offering a show special again this season at Curve – Accounts that we met with in February took advantage of the opportunity and wrote orders at the show to capture colors – or introduce a new style that they didn’t already offer in shop. We’d like to offer that opportunity again to the accounts that meet with us at the show, and take the time to plan their seasonal buys with us! Specific information on the show specials, will be available at the Curve NY event, and we look forward to meeting with both new and existing accounts!!
