Dora Larsen’s Colorful SS20 Collection

Dora Larsen SS20

Color lovers rejoice, the latest Dora Larsen collection has been revealed! There are three things that make one of their lingerie sets instantly recognizable, and eyelash lace and wide elastic waistbands are two of them. But it’s their adventurous color combinations that are the true signature of the brand’s aesthetic.

The Dora Larsen look is definitely a fun one. From pink mixed with yellow, to a bold flash of royal purple on an otherwise pale-toned garment, the colors are always what you notice first about these bra sets and bodysuits. But there’s also a sophistication to these designs. The color combinations never cross over into being garish.

Dream wardrobe: colourful lingerie and not much else.

“I sit down at my desk (or often on the floor as there’s not enough space on my desk!) and lay out hundreds of little fabric and Pantone swatches in front of me. I’ll play around combining them into colour combinations. That way I usually come up with something unique” says Dora Larsen founder Georgia, adding that she also pays attention to what’s trending in the world of fashion and interiors.

Dora Larsen SS20 Lucia

The color combinations in the Spring/Summer 2020 collection are some of my favorites yet. Some are bolder, such as the purple, pink and terracotta of the Ana range, or the vibrant blue overlaying the Lucia pieces. “I adore the Lucia,” Georgia told me, “The colours are so bright and dreamy, I think I would always feel in a good mood when I had this one on”.

Other designs have a mellower color palette, such as the soft pastels of the Marlowe and Ottalie ranges. What draws all of the different looks together, however, is that the color choices are always novel. Always slightly – or sometimes very! – unexpected.

Take the Hannah set for example. Both the bralette and underwired bra have a bright green hook-and-eye fastening at the back, despite nothing else on those sets being green. What other lingerie brand but Dora Larsen would think to do that?

Dora Larsen SS20 Hannah

This is a lingerie brand that knows exactly who it is. It has only been around since 2016, but already has a perfectly-defined vision of its aesthetic. That does not mean though that the brand isn’t continuing to experiment and evolve.

In fact, SS20 includes something completely new for Dora Larsen – pieces that are completely devoid of lace. Something that had, up until now, been an integral part of every garment’s design. Georgia calls these the ‘Clean Mesh’ pieces, and they open up the brand’s fun, colorful look to those who prefer their lingerie to be more minimal.

“I wanted to also represent a customer in our collections who prefers a cleaner look, with no lace,” she explains, “The cups are also moulded, so there’s no dart. We’ve chosen a super supportive, luxe mesh that also feels really comfortable against the skin.”

The introduction of the Clean Mesh pieces could not have been better timed. Ultra-minimal, ultra-sheer lingerie is a growing trend, and I would not be at all surprised if these became the brand’s 2020 bestsellers.

Dora Larsen SS20 Marnie

Comprising the Clean Mesh pieces are the terracotta-orange and baby pink Hannah range, and the sky-blue and purple Marnie range. They both include a choice of an underwired bra, a bralette, a high-waist brief, and a thong.

The other, lacier looks include padded bralettes, lined and unlined bras, high and low waist briefs, thongs, and bodysuits. Can’t choose a favorite shape? “From an everyday fit perspective, I’m addicted to our padded triangle bras,” recommends Georgia, “They are wire-free and insanely comfortable, plus the (removable) pad gives a lovely smooth shape under tops.”

Dora Larsen’s SS20 collection is launching in two drops – one in the second week of January, and the other arriving just before Valentine’s. And excitingly, it has been picked up by three major new retailers: Journelle, Net A Porter, and Fenwick. I see a bright future ahead for this independent lingerie label.
