Duchess of Dupont does CURVE and DC Swim Week

Hundreds of booths, thousands of garments, designers, seminars, press…shows like CURVENEWYORK and DC Swim Week are intimidating. But for lingerie entrepreneur Christina Arenas, the events became her playground and research centers.

Christina, the founder of Duchess of Dupont, an online lingerie boutique headquartered in Washington D.C., was not shy about requesting to try on as many products as she could from designers at CURVE, gaining vital information on fit and function, something she found especially valuable from a buyer’s point of view.

“I need to know how things fit,” she said. “There are things that you find that look great on the hanger but when you try them on they would not fit well on a standard American body. For example, Americans tend to have longer torsos and have more curves.”

Christina’s unwillingness to take an observer’s role is what she says drives the success of her business, and led her to CURVE and DC Swim Week this summer.

Duchess of Dupont carries a closely curated collection of independent brands with a focus on introducing well-crafted, international lines to women in the Washington D.C. area through pop-up shows and events, in-house appointments and online sales. Unsurprisingly, Christina is adamant on getting the right fit for her customers.

Christina attended this summer’s events as an industry professional with a vested interest towards her own enterprise. At both events, she gained more in-depth product knowledge and generated valuable social and business contacts.

“I liked the interaction with other lingerie storeowners,” she said of CURVENEWYORK. “It’s interesting to see their mindset. They have a very different mindset based on their location and based on their age.”

At DC Swim Week, Christina participated by showing looks from her shop’s current lines. The event was a way to not only generate buzz about her shop but, by extension, herald her own debut collection which fans can expect for FW19.

DC Swim Week also proved to be a launch pad for growth for her boutique. The connections she made at DC Swim Week influenced her to hold a swimwear/footwear trunk show with a fellow exhibitor.

CURVE provided the perfect place for Christina to indulge in new and old desired brands, including Noblesse Oblige, Avery Rose, Lise Charmel and Keep It Silky.

Although Duchess of Dupont already stocks Noblesse Oblige and Lise Charmel, Christina was still impressed by their offerings at CURVE hinting that the brand’s higher-end line, Yes Master, may be coming to her boutique.

Christina also admired what she termed a “colorful 60s vibe” emanating from Noblesse Oblige which Christina hails as “imaginative without being over the top.” The brand, she says also invited positive feedback at DC Swim Week when she presented its Seersucker collection.

“Avery Rose is a brand I’m trying out,” she adds. The brand’s incorporation of beautiful velvet fabric into their FW bras and their adjustable bralettes and underwear really impressed this selective lingerie lover.

Christina was also charmed by jewel-toned bralettes by Lise Charmel, which she found pretty and a smart choice for the younger market.

Silk knit designs by Keep It Silky also enticed Christina at CURVE, and she plans to stock this brand as she believes it’s a great choice for East Coast summers, given the practicality of the fabrication alongside a lower price point. “I love the incorporation of the lace with the knit silk,” she says. “It could even be bridal because [of the] white and ivory – so it’s perfect for honeymoon attire.”

To continue to fulfill her vision as a hub for all varieties of intimates, cotton pajamas are also on the list of what she plans to offer at Duchess of Dupont. She has plans to add the brand Sleepy Jones to her shop. The styles she will offer includes a “London Liberty” fabric and a sweet, girly print ideal for Valentine’s day.

She’s also planning to expand further into transitional wear this year, and has her eye on new lifestyle brands that design apparel suitable for lounge and resort.

With firm plans to attend the Lingerie Selection show next year, Christina looks forward to finding more intimate apparel treasures fit for the Duchess of Dupont, and creating some new ones of her own.
