Email Marketing Do’s and Don’ts

Email marketing is a great way to get information out to current and potential customers. It is efficient and economical. Here are a few email marketing tips to help improve your email marketing and keep you out of trouble.

Readability: Be aware that not everyone uses the same programs to view their email. Look at how the formatting looks in various programs. Some common ones are Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, and AOL Mail.

Text and HTML: Build your email in both text and html. Most email marketing tools, such as Constant Contact, allow you to do this easily. This allows customers who don’t accept html email the ability to read your email.

Do more than sell: Provide your customers with useful formation, not just another sales pitch for them to buy your product. Tips or hints that you have found useful to your business, or information from another source that you have found useful and believe would be of interest to them. It doesn’t have to be long, just some valuable information. Of course, you should have great tips and hints on how to best sell your products as well.

Keep it clean and short: The more complicated and long the message the less likely anyone will read it. Put the important points right at the top. Make your subject line clear and deliver what it says.

Don’t break the law: Some people doing email-marketing campaigns are breaking the law, and they don’t even know it. In the US we have the CAN-SPAM Act, but there are laws in other countries that vary and can be more stringent, so make sure you know the laws before you start an email marketing campaign. Each email that violates the CAN-SPAM Act is subject to penalties up to $16,000. Yes people, that is EACH ONE, not a one-time penalty per campaign. Know the rules.   1. The problem with email marketing is that everyone focuses on mass emails. There’s a company called wrapmail that focuses on our regular daily emails and these are always read and seen.
