Combine the glamour of the Roaring Twenties and a passion to help women in the performing arts with the creativity of an iconic American lingerie brand and you have the Hanky Panky After Midnight® presents Ziegfeld Follies lingerie collection.
The five styles in this special After Midnight® collection are the result of a collaboration between the iconic performing arts organization the Ziegfeld Club and Hanky Panky.
The lingerie pieces take inspiration from the fabulous looks worn by the original Ziegfeld Follies stars like Josephine Baker and Billie Burke and reinvents them to appeal to the modern tastes of a new generation.

“We wanted a partner that could design and produce beautiful sexy lingerie that, without looking old-fashioned, would evoke the glamour and feel of the Ziegfeld era,” said Laurie Sanderson, Executive Director of the Ziegfeld Club. “Hanky Panky was the obvious choice for making that vision a reality. Just look at the designs in the Hanky Panky After Midnight® presents Ziegfeld Follies collection. It’s clearly contemporary, ultra-sexy and glamorous lingerie, and no one would think it was from the 1920s; but it still manages to evoke the glamour and feeling of the Ziegfeld era.”

Launching in September 2016, the new collection also aims to bring attention to the Ziegfeld Club and their mission to support and encourage women in performing arts.
Founded in 1936 by Billie Burke, an iconic Ziegfeld Girl, in honor of her late husband Florenz Ziegfeld, The Ziegfeld Club was originally formed to provide help to Ziegfeld Girls who had fallen on hard times long after they were finished performing.
Today, the Club provides support to women in the theater, such as with the creation of the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award, which is given to an emerging female composer-lyricist with the potential to make great contributions to musical theater, along with preserving the legacy of Florenz Ziegfeld and the iconic Ziegfeld follies.

When asked why the Ziegfeld Club chose Hanky Panky as the lingerie company to create this collection, Emily Lansbury, Chair of the Ziegfeld Club, said, “While Hanky Panky’s founders Lida Orzeck and Gale Epstein are great supporters of women and the performing arts in New York City, the reason we approached them was because Lida was once a go-go dancer and Gale’s inspiration for Hanky Panky was a Victorian-era hankerchief! They have been the perfect partners for the Ziegfeld Club and we are so grateful for their support.”
While the collection is wonderfully evocative of the glamour and femininity of the 1920s, the collection pieces are created with the modern woman in mind, sexy and empowered, much like the Ziegfeld Girls of the time.

The styles in this collection — Dolores, Penny, Josephine, Billie, Lillian — are all named after several iconic Ziegfeld Girls, all of whom were (and are still) known for their talents and sex appeal.
“The Ziegfeld women were the sexual goddesses of their day. Ziegfeld’s fame and popularity — let’s face it — were based on their sex appeal,” said Sanderson.

The collection include thongs, bikinis, arm bands, bras, bralettes, a playsuit, a bodysuit, and a skirt, which either come in Black or Wild Orchid or Black and Silver, and were created with various fabrics such as embroidered tulle and Hanky Panky’s signature lace with a shimmery fringe added on.
To create the collection and stay true to the era’s spirit, Hanky Panky’s Lida Orzeck and Gale Epstein had access to the Ziegfeld Club’s archives as a source of inspiration.

“We have pictures that inspired each look from Ann Pennington in her adorable fringe shorts with suspenders, to Dolores with her Peacock feather costume, the Hanky Panky design team did a brilliant job taking inspiration from our archival material and creating a fresh, contemporary collection,” said Lansbury
The Dolores Bralette, Thong, and Showgirl Skirt, feature the exquisite peacock design Lansbury mentions. The illusion of feathers is created with iridescent threads in embroidered peacock feather on sheer netting.

Fans of the brand and the Ziegfeld Follies only have to wait a few more months to get a hold of the new collection. Starting on September 25, 2016, all of the pieces will be available on hankypanky.com and at department and specialty stores around the USA.
“What better way to bring the ultimate showman and his beautiful ladies back into the public eye than a lingerie line that celebrates the sexual energy of the female body? Mr. Ziegfeld would approve!” said Emily.
