Lingerie can make for a wonderful gift for your significant other – it’s indulgent, it’s intimate and it basically says “I find you attractive”, which everyone loves to hear from their partner!

However, you can’t just pick anything if you want them to feel truly special. Taking the time to choose something that fits with their personality and style will make it feel that much more thoughtful. But what to do when you have no idea where to begin looking?

Firstly, it will be very helpful to know your partner’s sizes. If you’re at a stage in your relationship where you know they won’t have a problem with you rummaging around in their lingerie drawer, or if you’re sharing the laundry, take a peek at the labels. Bear in mind that it’s crucial to know both the number and letter (e.g. 34D) for bras, and that it’s actually quite common to wear a different size in different brands, so check a few.

Go Beyond Bras

If you can’t find out your partner’s bra size, don’t worry. There is so much more to lingerie than just bras! How about treating them to a chemise or a luxury PJ set? Even a pair of fancy briefs can be a lovely gift on their own, especially if you’ve picked them out in a colour to coordinate with a bra they already own. Robes are also an excellent gift idea if you’re absolutely clueless about sizing, because they’re so flexible on fit.

Once you know what type of lingerie you’re looking for, consider what your partner already owns to figure out the style they most like wearing. For example, do they prefer briefs or thongs? Padded or sheer bras? Ones with or without an underwire? I would recommend sticking to similarly-constructed lingerie since it’s obviously what your partner feels most comfortable in, mentally and physically.

Aesthetically though, my advice is to look at what they wear day to day and buy a gift that’s one step up on the luxury ladder. It’s supposed to be a special treat after all! So if your partner lives in plain cotton undies, there’s a good chance a crotchless thong will be way outside of their comfort size, but how about a brief with a nice print? Or a panty that’s still minimalistic, but made from silk or satin?

Consider the colours your other half already has in their lingerie drawer too. Do they like cute pastels, fun brights, classic black, or perhaps simple beige or white? You don’t have to stick to them but it’s a good indicator of what they’re drawn to and find most flattering against their skin tone – and yes, it is perfectly possible to find a glamorous and luxurious bra in beige!

If your aim is to buy something sexy but it’s not what your other half normally wears, I think 3-piece sets with a garter belt or briefs, bodies and basques with detachable garter straps are an excellent compromise. You can gift it along with a pair of nice stockings, but it’s in their hands whether to wear the lingerie with or without.

Bonus Tip: Visit a local lingerie boutique

Be sure to ask about or check the store’s returns policy. Bra sizing especially is so tricky to get right that even women shopping for themselves online often end up exchanging bras for a different size, so double check that you’re not buying a ‘final sale’ item and what the deadline is to bring it back.

Whether online or offline, the staff at a lingerie boutique will be more than happy to help you pick something out too. Take full advantage of their underwear knowledge and ask them which of the brands in store have a similar fit, aesthetic or construction to those your partner already wears.

If you’ve read all of this and are still feeling pretty clueless, find a boutique in your area that carries a variety of styles and sizes, and make an experience of it. Book an appointment and take your partner as a surprise to pick out something together. Even better, hand over a gift card in advance so that they can concentrate on just finding something that they love, without worrying whether they’re overstepping the budget you had in mind!
