How to Shop for Petite Busted Women

“While shopping for a woman with a full bust can be bewildering, shopping for petite busted women can be just as complex.”

by Kim “Kimmay” Caldwell

When my husband and I started dating, I half jokingly said “You’ll never have to buy me lingerie” because my collection was already so vast. But truthfully, it was really “please don’t buy me lingerie because I have great taste and a unique bust size and I don’t trust you to pick out something that will fit well and that I’ll love to wear”. Harsh, but true.

For men, shopping for lingerie can be exciting but daunting. Questions like:

  • What if it doesn’t fit?
  • What if she doesn’t like it?
  • Thong or panty?
  • What the heck is the difference between a DD and an E cup?
  • Will the ladies in the lingerie shop think I’m a creeper?

As a bra fitter and lingerie Marketing Director for over 10 years, I’ve seen and understand the frustration. The intimate apparel world is wonderful, but confusing for consumers – men and women alike. There are a few pitfalls shoppers should avoid when shopping for a woman of any bust size. In fact, while shopping for a woman with a full bust can be bewildering, shopping for a woman with a petite bust can be just as complex.

“Retailers, inform your male customers that flowing or elasticized chemises and babydolls are easy to size and make beautiful gifts.”

Stephanie Ballard of Bella Petite Lingerie knows first hand. As a petite busted 34A herself, she labored with the task of finding the perfect lingerie for her wedding night. “I’ve never been able to buy lingerie in the store as the sizes were always too big and would hang on me like a tent, leaving me to feel like I was lacking something” says Ballard. Her journey to help women with a similar predicament started, and so did Bella Petite Lingerie. “I wanted to design pieces for women like myself that would help make them feel good about the body they were given, and not feel like they had to change to some ideal of beauty that society feeds them.”

Why Chemises and Babydolls are Easy to Size & Sell

Every woman wants to feel beautiful in her own body, and giving her a sexy gift that fits and compliments her unique shape will encourage her to feel that way. That’s why flowing chemises and well designed baby dolls make great gifts! No fussing with bra sizes and proper fitting, no how-does-this-thing-even-work debacle. I’ve always told male shoppers to “keep it simple and keep it beautiful – you can’t go wrong.”

“…our chemises have elastic under the bust which also helps make sizing simpler.” – Stephanie Ballard.

And for the man who’s concerned that the chemise or babydoll won’t extenuate the bust, Ballard has this to say: “our designs are flattering to petite busted women, drawing attention to the bust and highlighting it, not hiding it.” And there are other bonuses to going with a lingerie item like this. Ballard adds: “They are very comfortable and loose fitting around the waist which makes it easier to purchase a size that will fit her. In addition, our chemises have elastic under the bust which also helps make sizing simpler.” See what I mean? Simple is good.

More Tips for Sizing and Shopping for Petite Busted Women

If size is still a worry I advise men to do a little investigating, use the size charts on websites, and reach out for help. A little help and a little planning go a long way. Stephanie has this advice for partners looking to make an impact with the gift of lingerie: “The purchase should be about the woman you are buying it for, meaning something SHE will like. Think about her favorite colors and the styles she wears…If you don’t know [her size], take a peek in her underwear drawer and write down her bra and panty sizes.”

You can use this information when looking at size charts to help you decide on the correct size for the piece you are purchasing. If you are not sure, don’t be afraid to reach out to someone at the company to ask their advice on sizing. Ultimately if you do it right, your special lady will feel incredibly sexy wearing the lingerie you bought, and she will likely thank you for it.” How she chooses to show that thanks is entirely up to her.

Petite Bust Sales Tips for Retailers

Here’s a handy list of tips that retailers can suggest to men to help them pick the perfect piece of lingerie for that someone special:

  • Flowing or elasticized chemises and babydolls are easy to size and make beautiful gifts
  • Choose colors and styles that compliment her personal taste
  • Do a little investigating on her current bra and panty sizing
  • Use the size charts and helpful experts when in doubt
  • For something playful: go with prints, ruffles, and soft fabrics and colors
  • For something sexy: go with lace, sheer materials, and vibrant colors
  • Present your gift with love and affection and tell her how truly beautiful you know she is.

Happy lingerie shopping!
