While we all wish our tanned legs, natural highlights and summer Fridays would last all year round, there is no escaping the upcoming chill in the air. The emergence of fall and winter brings some wonderful bonuses like better hair weather, the latest episodes of Mad Men and, of course, the new shopping season. Customers are filling their closets with silky blouses, nubby sweaters, colorful cords, and hosiery, the season’s accessory of the moment.

“Hosiery is an important trend for fall,” according to Donna DeMarco, Hosiery Buyer at Bare Necessities. “We are expecting great growth in our business this season. This category is fresh again due in part to exposure from Kate and Pippa Middleton and from its natural compatibility with current shoe trends like pointy toe pumps, ankle booties and over-the-knee boots. Hosiery is also a relatively affordable way to stay on trend for fall.”

The idea of making a statement with hosiery is back in a big way with plenty of options for women of all ages, sizes and tastes.

Do the Polka

This season has everyone seeing spots. The polka dot trend is officially here and is on everything from sexy cocktail dresses to your favorite stockings. Polka dotted hosiery is an easy and relatively affordable way to embrace the spotted trend. Before you blow your savings on a polka dotted fur coat, try out a pair of dotted sheer stockings under your favorite LBD or add them to a classic black suit for a little edge. Polka dotted hosiery is fun, sexy and works for day or night. Tiny dots are a toned down way to add playful style to an office ensemble, while oversized and dramatic spots are perfect for making an unforgettable evening statement.  Whether you prefer your polka dots subtle or striking, both will keep your legs looking stylish and modern this season.

Sheer Hosiery 2.0

It might take gentle hypnosis, but it is time to stop associating sheer stockings with the rigid pearls and brash power suits of the 1980’s. Thanks to Kate and Pippa Middleton, the “It” sisters and fashion icons of the moment, sheer hosiery is making a very real and very stylish comeback. Sheer stockings and (we’ll whisper it) pantyhose instantly give your legs a polished and blemish-free appearance. They are a simple way to finish a look and feel instinctively feminine. Unlike the oddly colored skin tone stockings of the past, the sheer hosiery of today comes in a myriad of realistic shades and looks almost transparent against the skin. Everyone loves a good comeback and this season sheer hosiery is ready for its close-up.

Open to Opaque

Like hearty glasses of pinot noir and flat riding boots, black opaque tights are a winter essential. Not only do they cover up a host of figure flaws but they keep your legs warm and go perfectly with everything in your closet from long cozy grandpa cardigans to delicious tweed miniskirts. While the black opaque tight is not losing its super hero status anytime soon, this season’s freshest opaque tights come in rich jewel tones of berry, jade and sapphire. Colorful opaque tights are an easy way to complement the season’s standard palette of black, brown and gray. They add playful style and whimsy to office, weekend or nighttime looks. The options in opaque are endless and they are truly a foolproof and ageless fashion accessory.

Pattern Play

Herringbone, houndstooth and cable knit might sound like your winter sweater wardrobe, but they also describe some of this season’s hottest patterned tights. Printed tights instantly add texture and a serious fashion sensibility to any look. Beyond traditional hosiery patterns, of-the-moment animal prints and optically influenced diamond and swirl prints also translate well on the leg. Many of this season’s patterns are subtle enough to wear as a basic with all of your everyday skirts, suits and dresses. While printed tights are a relatively effortless and safe trend to carry off, make sure to balance out the rest of your look with solid colors and muted textures. A zebra printed tight feels right with a black sweater dress, but is a serious miss when paired with a bold leopard shift.
