Many retailers are asking if they should have a mobile user site.  It’s a great question, and one answer does not fit all. The easiest way to answer the question is by answering some questions yourself:

How are my customers accessing my site today and what are they doing while there?

  • PC: If your customers are using mostly PC’s then the answer is a simple no.
  • Tablet: If they are using tablets, then we would advise that you simply make sure your site is W3C validated, as a validated site will render quickly and look very nice on a tablet.
  • Smart Phones: If your customers are using smart phones to access your site then you will want to think about a mobile site strategy, as the screens are smaller and you will want to have less clutter on the site, allowing for a more enjoyable browsing experience.

How much should I invest in a mobile strategy?

The answer to this one is simple as it is based on your expected ROI (Return On Investment).  If you have a lot of mobile users, then you should develop a staged approach to implementing a mobile site.  Start with a simple mobile site with some core functions, measure the results, and determine how to move forward from there.

Our take on mobile sites are simple.

If you are a wholesaler, at this time there is limited value in creating a mobile site. The majority of your retailers are using a PC to access your site.  In deciding to do a mobile site you may want to gear it more towards a catalog function for consumer viewing.

If you are a retailer, use your analytics to determine how your users are accessing your site.  If you see a growing percentage of customers using mobile devices to access your site then you will want to start developing your mobile strategy.  Start out simple using a staged approach to minimize cost and maximize value.
