The holiday season makes up the most important quarter for the majority of retailers. In order to make the most of this profit-making season, it’s important that lingerie and sleepwear stores identify the biggest trends of the winter season. This fall season, lingerie brands and loungewear brands have been reveling in a jewel-tone color palette across the board; from Stella McCartney’s ode to spring with her turquoise and pink collection to Eberjey’s emerald hued pajama collection. To help predict the biggest winter trends in lingerie and sleepwear for 2013, we interviewed two top designers from the British brands, Olivia Von Halle and Bordelle.

Winter, in general, means an increase in bulky layers worn on top, making it a great time to carry bras with more lace detailing. Women with larger bust sizes will appreciate the minimizing effect of seamed full cup bras that will give them their desired silhouette under all the bulk of a winter sweater. Summer lingerie sales tend to lean towards t-shirt bras or other breathable light materials. Winter gives retailers a chance to showcase more intricately design bras.

“One winter lingerie and sleepwear trend that will sit well with all retailers is the increase in overall price that consumers will pay for items.”

December is a month for gift giving for several different reasons: Christmas, Hannukah and It’s the number one month for engagements in the United States! If you’re still trying to figure out how to merchandise an expensive piece for your store or brand, this may be the month to spotlight it. Consumers spend more during this quarter than any other quarter of the fiscal year. They may also feel more prompted to spend on lingerie and sleepwear due to Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.

Bordelle, a luxury lingerie brand, known for its vampy aesthetic is one collection that does well during the gift-giving season. Bordelle lingerie brings a truly unique option for customers who are inspired by the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trend. While the overall aesthetic of the brand continues it’s playful, tongue-in-cheek direction, Bordelle feels that, “… [our] AW13/14 collection is Bordelle’s first attempt at revealing the softer, romantic side of the Bordelle woman.” Designer and founder, Alexandra Popa, continues, “I wanted this collection to be different and in contrast to Bordelle’s earlier seasons to reflect not only my personal shift in tastes and preferences but the maturity of the label as a whole. The shift in design direction has been extremely positively received and as a result we have acquired new international clients who would not have opted for Bordelle in the absence of this change”.

Best sellers for Bordelle during the holiday season include the “Contour Angela Dress”, famously worn by fashion icon, Lady Gaga, and their “Signature Harness Thong” that adjusts to any size and matches most black bras.

The lingerie and sleepwear trend of jewel tones colors will continue into the winter season, but instead of pink and cobalt, look for richer colors, like, burgundy, imperial purple and sapphire. One sleepwear designer who is at the forefront of this colorful trend is Olivia Von Halle. Her Autumn/Winter 2013 “Shanghai Collection” features luscious silks in cobalt, raspberry and royal blue. She explains, “Asia is a wealth of inspiration for any designer – it is a vast area and each region has its own unique aesthetic. I could take a different country in Asia and design collections inspired by just one region for years to come – there is so much to look at and be excited by. Living in Shanghai [as a trend predictor and luxury consultant] was an amazing opportunity as we were able to travel cheaply and easily all over Asia – I do miss popping to Tokyo for the weekend!”

Olivia Von Halle’s luxurious silk pajamas make a great gift option for retailers. The brand’s best sellers include the Coco Pajama and the Lila Pajama. The British pajama brand has quite a following and even counts David Beckham as a fan. He bought wife, Victoria Beckham, a pair of her very own last Christmas.

The winter season is always a beautiful one for lingerie and sleepwear collections. Many of these individual trends, such as, intricate lace detailing and gem colors are even being combined together for winter. Adrienne Coleon Gaskell, style expert at Simone Perele, explains, “the vibrancy of the jewel tone and the sensuousness of the lace make a delicious pairing that’s perfect around the holidays”. This pattern of overlapping trends will truly make this season and unforgettable one.

Happy Holidays!
